Studying Against the Clock; What to Prioritize for the Series 7

When you only have a few weeks or a few days, left to study, you’ll need to know what to prioritize for the Series 7. In this post, we give you a quick rundown around where to focus your studying energy.

What to Prioritize for the Series 7…The Big Stuff

When it comes to the Series 7 exam, there are some key topics. For many students, this exam is a much different one than the SIE Exam. The content is similar to the SIE, except the curriculum goes a little deeper on every subject.

Another major difference is the level of concentration per topic. For instance, you run the likelihood of seeing some content tested more heavily than others.

If you’re looking for some helpful insight into specific questions, we highly recommend Kaplan‘s Q-Bank. This resource can be purchased on its own for less than $70 and does an excellent job breaking out topics, and likely topics to be tested (by weight).

By that, we mean that it weights the number of questions in its Q-Bank in a way that may give you a sneak peek into the largest sections of the exam.

More Doesn’t Have to Mean Harder

The one thing to keep in mind is that even though there are more questions, with more studying things get easier.

One section that we recommend that everyone review frequently in the last few days (or weeks) is Options. Whether talking about a call option or a put option, a long straddle, or a debit spread, this section has plenty to confuse you.

Not only that, but it’s likely to be tested heavily.

For that reason, we recommend studying this section at least twice a week from the get-go. If you start studying six weeks before your exam, we recommend that you incorporate studying the Options section for at least 20 minutes twice per week to make sure you’re constantly keeping the section fresh. If not, your mind is likely to relieve itself of remembering Options concepts quite quickly (it happens to everyone!).

The other sections we would recommend reviewing on a frequent occasion given their likely presence on the exam is: Municipal Bonds, Suitability, Investment Companies, and Margin.

We should also note that Kaplan labels Margin as “extension of credit“ on their Q-Bank.

All of the above is likely to be tested , but how heavily can change from exam to exam.

You can rest assured, however, these core topics are not likely going anywhere. So, we highly advise you prioritize these specific topics toward the end of your studying to make sure you have your bases covered.
