Looking for Extra Points on Your Series 7 Exam? This Tip May Help

There is a quick and easy way to score a few extra points on your Series 7 Exam. In this post, we will open the door to this method, and explain the easiest way to approach it.

Extra Points on Your Series 7 Exam

At Professional Exam Tutoring, we see hundreds of students every year. Unfortunately, that also means that we hear hundreds of stories every year of students just barely missing a passing grade. The Series 7 Top-Off difficulty is high, so every point that you can get is valuable.

On that note, we have a tip that might help you score an extra 3% to 5% at a minimum.

When You Understand Options But Don’t the Definition of “Additional Takedown”

The lowest hanging fruit when it comes to study material for the Series 7 Exam, is typically definitional. However, memorizing definitions is often monotonous, not fun, and something our students often leave until the last week of studying.

The latter, is a big mistake. We highly recommend that you spend plenty of time during your entire study period memorizing as many obscure facts as you can. This will help solidify them with repetitive review and ensure they hold in your long term memory. The reason this is so important is that memory type questions are fairly binary. For instance, if you know the definition of the “Additional Takedown” then you’ll recognize it immediately. If not, it may be an entire guess.

Additionally, at times your memory work might not help you recognize a definition precisely (although it may). But, it could help you eliminate other multiple choice options as incorrect. Thus, narrowing your guessing from a 25% chance (1 out of 4), to 50/50.

Areas where you should specifically focus are typically rules and regulations (or tricky product names), that you consistently get wrong. Things like Rule 144A, Rule 147, Regulation D, and random time periods like how long a broker dealer must keep customer complaints on record.

Almost no one that we have run into, can learn any of these single time and then know it with certainty later on.

The Solution

The best approach is to create your own study sheet, or flashcards. We highly recommend against using a friend’s, or buying flash cards. Flash cards customized to your own needs will be much more useful. Furthermore, the act of writing them out will help you study on its own.

Make sure that you review these at least 20 to 30 minutes per day. To give you a sense of numbers, most people can get through 5 to 10 definitions per day. You don’t have to know the definitions stone cold. Remember, this is a multiple-choice exam so as long as you can recognize the answer, that’s all you really need.

If you can put together a list of 100 to 150 different rules and regulations, and definitions that are giving you trouble, and regularly review them daily for a two week period, then you are highly likely to boost your score by about 5% or more.

All in all, this is a simple approach that will ensure a few extra points on the exam. With roughly 70% of our tutoring requests from students who failed but scored above 65% on an exam, a few points here and there can make all the difference. If you need some help, try a tutor or our Series 7 video course. Good luck!
