How to Remember Dates: It’s in Your Note Taking

One of the common sticking points for most people is studying how to remember dates. In both FINRA and NASAA exams there are plenty of dates and days to remember. In today’s post we give our recommendation on how to keep these straight.

How to Remember Dates: Separate Your Notes

Whether you’re studying for the SIE Exam, Series 7 Exam, Series 63 Exam, or any other others, you will miss a lot of questions unless you keep track of dates and times.

Everything from renewing registration as an agent or investment advisor, to registering securities, to settlement dates and payment dates, there is no shortage of dates to remember.

At Professional Exam Tutoring, we get a lot of questions about the best way to recall dates. To most people’s surprise, the big test taking prep providers such as STC, Kaplan, and Knopman Marks don’t tend to have a one stop shop resource with dates to remember (Note: Knopman Marks does have a good supplement for the Series 79 Exam prep with dates related to regulatory filings).

Therefore, we highly recommend that you make your own notes based on your own needs.

The Solution

Like most studying, having your own notes is superior to having someone else’s.

The only notes we recommend that you have are on topics and subjects addressing your own weak areas.

This also applies to keeping track of dates that are an issue for you to remember. For example, on the Series 63 exam if you cannot remember the difference between when to renew securities registration as opposed to agent registration, then write that down.

Also keep track of other dates, but keep it all on one specific piece of paper or word document.

Overall, try to separate out your studying for dates and everything else. We find that it’s much easier for students to keep track of dates all in one area rather than trying to remember them in patchwork subject by subject. Though they aren’t likely to be 20 points of your exam, they may be a good handful of points worth getting. Feel free to reach out if you need any help! Good luck!
